India Pale Ale, or IPA, is one of the most beloved and recognisable beer styles out there. Bursting with bold, hoppy flavour, these beers are known for their vibrant bitterness and floral, citrusy aromas.
IPAs originated in the 18th century when extra hops were used to preserve beer on long voyages to British troops in India. That preservation hack gave us one of the most enduring styles in beer history.
Today, IPA beer styles come in many delicious forms: American IPA, Session IPA, Double and Triple IPA, Red IPA, DDH, NEIPA, Sour and Fruit IPAs. No matter your flavour preference, there’s an IPA that’s bold enough to match.
What is IPA?
IPAs are top-fermented beers with a hop-forward profile that sets them apart from Pale Ales. They’re typically golden to copper in colour, with a firm, cream-coloured foam and bitterness levels ranging from 40–100+ IBU thanks to hops like Cascade, Simcoe, and Amarillo.
India Pale Ale can be citrusy, grassy, herbal, fruity or even earthy. The most iconic version? The American IPA, famous for its punchy citrus and floral aromas. Among all IPA beer styles, it’s the one that really sets the bar.
