Blonde beer
Blonde beer, also called 'golden ale' or 'blonde ale', is an accessible beer style with a slightly higher alcohol content. Belgian blonde beer brands are world-famous and are known for the balance between malt, hops and fruity yeast. This makes blonde beer easy to drink on any occasion and, in fact, just all year round.
What is blonde beer?
Blonde beer is smooth and fresh in taste, which is why it is so popular. Blonde beer is often higher in alcohol content and is usually between 5% and 9%. Another characteristic is that it is a top-fermenting beer, while pilsener, for example, is a bottom-fermenting beer. As a result, blonde beer has some fruity and sometimes spicy aromas. Blonde beer is often seen as a real thirst quencher due to its ease of drinking, but is also perfect as an aperitif.
What is the difference between white and blonde beer?
Besides blonde beer, you also have white beer, of course. But what are the differences between white and blonde beer? The brewing process of white beer uses wheat with various spices, while blonde beer uses barley malt and hops without any additional spices. In addition, white beer has a more cloudy colour, while blonde beer is golden yellow in your glass. In terms of flavour, blonde beer is generally sweet and malty, whereas white beer tastes more fruity and spicy. Blonde beer also generally has a higher alcohol content than white beer.
Blonde beer pairing
Due to its accessible character, blonde beer is best paired with simple pasta, chicken or fish dishes. As long as no heavy sauces dominate the flavour of the beer. If you want to go one step further, order a blonde beer alongside sushi. Sushi has a delicate flavour of its own, and this golden beer fits in perfectly with it! Due to the subtle flavour of the beer, the fish will have the main role during the meal and the beer can clean up the taste buds. Try it with blond beer brands like Affligem Blond, Troost Honing Blond or Pelforth Blond.
Belgian blonde beer
Blonde beer is mainly brewed as an alternative to darker Belgian beers. Unlike dark beer, Belgian Blonde is brewed only with light malts. There are several types of Belgian Blonde beer, of which Duvel is probably the best known.
Strong (Belgian) blonde beer
There are also stronger varieties of Belgian Blonde beer that have an alcohol content of 7.5% to 9.5%. This beer is very popular among beer lovers who like a fruity aroma with a fairly dry aftertaste. Any lover of Belgian Blonde beer is familiar with the famous Belgian beer names such as Duvel and Affligem. These strong Belgian blonde beers vary in colour, often ranging between light blonde and light golden blonde. This results in an accessible beer heading towards a Tripel, but with lower complexity. This stronger variant of Belgian Blond, is delicious to combine with all kinds of cheese. Think brie or a variation of Gouda!
