Birra Moretti Beer History
Birra Moretti: an authentic Italian beer since 1859
In 1859, an authentic Italian beer was born: Birra Moretti. That same year, Luigi Moretti, just 37 years old, opened the Brewery and Ice Factory in Udine, northern Italy. Coming from a family of merchants, Moretti had a strong understanding of trade and quality — foundations that would shape the brand for generations.
From the very beginning, Birra Moretti was brewed as a low-fermentation Italian lager, a style that remains at the heart of the brand today.
Birra Moretti original recipe
One of the most remarkable things about Birra Moretti is its consistency. The Birra Moretti Original Recipe has remained unchanged since 1859 and is still brewed using traditional methods.
A carefully selected blend of fine hops gives the beer its pleasant bitterness, floral aromas and balanced flavour profile. With its relatively low alcohol content, Birra Moretti is an ideal mealtime beer, especially alongside pizza, pasta and classic Italian dishes.
From local Italian beer to global favourite
For many years, Birra Moretti remained a largely local Italian beer, only expanding into international markets in the 1990s. Despite this regional focus, the brewery was surprisingly advanced for its time. Its equipment and brewing technology were considered revolutionary in Italy, where production was still largely artisanal.
To this day, Birra Moretti adheres to strict brewing standards, using premium raw materials, quality malts and a distinctive hop blend to maintain its recognisable taste.
Awards and recognition
The quality of Birra Moretti has been recognised worldwide. Over the past 14 years, the brewery has received 148 international awards. It gained particular recognition at the World Beer Cup in 2006, where it won gold and silver medals, followed by five additional medals at the Australian International Beer Awards.
