German Wheatbeer

What is wheat beer?

German wheat beer (Weissbier or Weizen), as per German “Reinheitsgebot”, does not incorporate spices or any other additions. It’s actually the yeast that gives the wheat beer its fruity, spicy taste, while the wheat works to make it soft and refreshing. German wheat beer or Weissbier contains more than 50% wheat whereas Belgian wheat beer or Witbier generally contains less. During the brewing process of Witbier, the brewer adds coriander seed and orange peel to give it its crisp and slightly sour taste.

Weissbier and Witbier

Another difference between German and Belgian wheat beer is the alcohol percentage. Belgian Witbier generally has a slightly lower amount of alcohol. The serving temperature differs as well, and German Weissbier is best served at 6 to 8 degrees whereas the Belgian version is best served at 3 to 5 degrees. The most popular Weissbier styles are the Paulaner Hefeweizen or the Erdinger Hefeweizen, while Blanche de Namur is an excellent example of a Belgian Witbier.

Tasting wheat beer

Besides the Belgian and German wheat beer varieties, there are many other delicious alternatives, each with their own subtle differences in taste, appearance and texture. They do all, however, share some unifying characteristics. One of these is the fact that wheat is full of protein, more so than barley. This means that wheat beers have longer and thicker heads. At the same time, this protein contributes towards creating the distinctive haze that can be seen when you look through a glass of Weissbier or Witbier. Wheat beer, and in particular German wheat beer, also has a silky mouthfeel. No matter which type of Weissbier or Witbier you prefer though, there’s no doubt this is a highly effervescent and pleasantly elevating beer that’s perfect for every season.
